Unlacquered vs Lacquered Brass: What Is the Difference?

Unlacquered Brass Widespread 3-Hole Bathroom Vanity Faucet

Brass is one of the most loved finishes for faucets, showers and lighting. But when you start shopping you will see two words again and again: lacquered and unlacquered. Here is what they mean and how to choose.

What is lacquered brass?

Lacquered brass is coated with a clear protective layer. The coating keeps the metal bright and shiny, and it slows down tarnish. The trade-off is that the coating can wear, scratch or peel over time, and it is hard to repair evenly once that starts.

What is unlacquered brass?

Unlacquered brass has no coating at all. The raw metal reacts with air, water and touch, so it slowly darkens and develops a warm, soft patina. No two pieces age in exactly the same way, which is why many designers love it.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose unlacquered if you like a lived-in, antique look and do not mind a little occasional polishing.
  • Choose lacquered if you want a bright, uniform look that stays the same with very little effort.
  • In busy kitchens and bathrooms, unlacquered brass hides small scratches well, because the patina blends them in.
